If you want to explore the history of the orthodox religion, then the Ecclesiastical School of Dimitsana will give you a crash course. It was one of the most important church schools of the Peloponnese, as well as the Tuition Centre of Greek Literature (Frontistirio Ellinikon Grammaton). A substantial number of famous religious figures and scholars have graduated from this school, such as Grigorios V and Germanos III of Patras. The museum was founded in 1992 and it’s housed in the renovated residence of Patriarch Gregory V, close to the square of the historical village, which adds a scent of mysticism to your visit.
Sacred vessels of the Divine Service, relief crucifixes, old books, incense boats, the Testaments, gold embroidered canonicals, a painted vestry, a remarkable collection of various types of icons, such as that of Saint Georgios, a work made in Mount Athos in 1808, three despotic icons which belong to the Cretan School of the 17th century, an icon of John the Precursor, an altar door depicting the scene of the Annunciation.
