We inform our hiking friends who wish to hike in the wider area of Vytina, that parts of the Menalon Trail are only the routes Elati-Vytina-Nymfasia and vice versa, which bear the relevant markings. It is noted that the alternative route from the kiosk in Mavra Litharia to the bridge of Zarzi and vice versa, through a wooden bridge and a ladder that exists in between, is not part of the marked route of the Menalon Trail. Much of this route, due to weather conditions, is inaccessible and needs maintenance to be fully operational again. The Municipality of Gortynia has already been informed as a competent maintenance body in order to take care of the maintenance of the point and to make it again fully accessible and safe for the public. Until then, for the safety of visitors, it is recommended to avoid access or otherwise take the necessary personal security measures.
After resting and provisioning, leave Vytina and continue on the route leading to Nymphasia.
After walking 850 meters on asphalt you’ll reach Old Vytina and the trailhead of the footpath that will leads to Mavra Litharia, a massive limestone boulder in the riverbed of Milaon River, that the stream cut in half creating a short yet impressive gorge.
From here start descending to the Tzavarenas’ bridge, a solid stone bridge that secured the connection between Vytina with the western gortynian villages.
The path gains altitude in a unique rocky landscape made of flysch covered with shrubs, reaching an altitude of 880 meters and wending horizontally towards Nymphasia, a small yet lively satellite of Vytina.
